Adhering to GOED's Monograph

What the monograph specifies, and how testing demonstrates conformance.

The GOED Monograph is an industry quality standard. GOED members are required to adhere to it as a condition of membership, and many buyers use it as a condition of purchase.

What it covers

  • Composition — EPA, DHA and total omega-3 content, by chemical form.
  • Oxidation — peroxide value, anisidine value and TOTOX, each with a ceiling.
  • Contaminants — heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins and furans.
  • Identity and labelling consistency.

Demonstrating it

Conformance is a testing programme, not a single certificate. The composition work and the oxidation work use different methods and often different sample handling — oxidation results in particular are sensitive to how the sample travelled.

An oxidation result measures the sample as it arrived, which is not always the sample as it was shipped.
